The Hartford Cougars were one of the four founding teams in The League during its inaugural season in 1916. The Cougars, like the other teams in The League, were inactive during World War I. Following the re-establishment of The League in 1923, the Cougars name and roster was transferred to a franchise located in Trenton, New Jersey. The Trenton Cougars ceased operations in 1942, when The League was contracted after losing many of its players to service in World War II. It is unknown if the Cougars were folded outright, or if they continued as one of the newly relocated teams.
